Student Cinema Birmingham: Electric Cinema and Cineworld Broad Street

The best student cinema deals in Birmingham. The Electric Cinema is the standout - here is how to access it cheaply.

Birmingham has a strong cinema offer covering independent and mainstream options, with student pricing making most of them accessible. The Electric Cinema in particular is one of the best reasons to be a student in Birmingham.

The Electric Cinema, Station Street

The Electric Cinema on Station Street is the oldest working cinema in the UK, dating from 1909, and it is still one of the best. The programming covers art house, classics, and new releases with an emphasis on quality over volume. The student rate is available with university card and brings tickets to around £8-9. The interior – leather sofas, cocktail service, and an intimate screen – makes it a genuinely different experience from a multiplex. Worth going at least once a term regardless of what is on. The student membership card offers further discounts on regular visits and is worth buying if you plan to go three or more times in a year.

Cineworld Broad Street

The Cineworld at Broad Street is the city centre multiplex and covers all major new releases with standard student pricing via NUS or university card. The Cineworld Unlimited card is worth calculating – if you go twice a month it pays for itself. IMAX screen available for bigger releases. Broad Street is a 15-minute walk from the University of Birmingham campus or a short bus ride.

Everyman Birmingham, Mailbox

The Everyman at the Mailbox is the mid-market option between the Electric and a standard multiplex. Sofa seating, food and drinks service, and a mixed programme covering new releases and classics. Student pricing applies. Not as distinctive as the Electric but a comfortable option for a specific kind of evening out.

Vue Star City

Out at Star City near the A38(M), Vue is the suburban multiplex option. Cheaper than the city centre options on standard tickets and easier to access by car. Student pricing available. Good for blockbusters where the big screen matters more than the atmosphere.

Film Societies

The University of Birmingham Film Society runs screenings through the academic year at low cost. BCU has equivalent provision. Both screen films outside the mainstream and are worth joining for £5-10 annual membership.
