Part-Time Jobs for Birmingham Students

Finding part-time work in Birmingham as a student. Where the best flexible jobs actually are.

Birmingham is a large enough city that student employment is genuinely available across most sectors. The question is finding work that fits around a degree. Here is where to look efficiently.

University Job Boards

Both the University of Birmingham and BCU run student employment portals that list on-campus and affiliated roles. These are designed for student schedules and the employers understand term-time constraints. The University of Birmingham’s Student Jobshop is the most active portal and lists roles weekly across research assistant positions, event support, library work, and IT help roles. Apply early in term – the best campus jobs are competitive.

Broad Street and Brindleyplace Hospitality

The bar and restaurant strip around Broad Street, Brindleyplace, and the Mailbox hires heavily from the student population. Bar work is the most common entry point and most venues pay above minimum wage once trained. The physical proximity to the University of Birmingham campus and BCU’s Eastside site makes Broad Street particularly practical. Walk in with a CV and ask for a manager on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon rather than a weekend when venues are too busy to interview.

Bullring and Grand Central Retail

The Bullring and Grand Central are the largest retail concentrations in the city and both hire year-round with significant uptake for Christmas temp work from October. Most of the anchor stores – Selfridges, John Lewis, Zara, H&M – take student workers on short contracts that sometimes extend. The Grand Central food court also hires regularly for counter service and kitchen roles.

Deliveroo in Central Birmingham

Deliveroo coverage in Birmingham city centre, Selly Oak, and Edgbaston is dense enough to make bicycle delivery viable. Earnings vary but are typically better than minimum wage in busy periods. The flexibility of choosing your own hours is the main advantage for students. Insure your bicycle separately – the basic insurance cover provided is minimal.

NEC and ICC Events

The National Exhibition Centre and the International Convention Centre both use event staff agencies for large events. Companies including Adecco and Brook Street regularly recruit for event work that pays well and requires no previous experience. Good for students who want occasional high-earning days rather than regular weekly hours.
