International Student Guide to Birmingham

Everything international students need to know about living in Birmingham. What to sort first.

Birmingham is one of the UK’s most diverse cities and has a long history of welcoming international students. The practical infrastructure is well developed and the community networks across most nationalities are strong. Here is what to sort first.

Banking on Arrival

Open a UK bank account as early as possible. HSBC, Barclays, and Santander all offer student accounts that require a university acceptance letter and proof of address. For students who want faster account opening, Monzo and Revolut work without waiting for a branch appointment and operate fully from a smartphone. Both are accepted for most salary payments and direct debits. Once you have a UK account, set up direct debits for accommodation and phone contracts.

Police Registration

Students from countries outside the EU, EEA, and Switzerland with a visa requiring police registration must register at the Overseas Visitor Records Office in Birmingham. The university will advise on whether your visa requires this and the deadline involved. Do this in the first week – penalties for late registration are real.

Food From Home in Birmingham

Birmingham is one of the best UK cities for international food shopping. The Balti Triangle area on Ladypool Road and the surrounding south Birmingham streets have dozens of South Asian grocery stores covering every regional cuisine. Chinatown on Arcadian Centre covers East Asian needs. Wing Yip Cash and Carry on the Tyburn Road is one of the largest Asian supermarkets in the UK and covers an enormous range. For West African groceries, Lozells and Handsworth have multiple dedicated shops. Birmingham is genuinely well served.

Faith Facilities

Birmingham has places of worship for most faith traditions across the city. The university chaplaincy services at both UoB and BCU maintain contacts for local mosques, temples, gurdwaras, and churches. Birmingham Central Mosque on Belgrave Middleway is one of the largest in Europe and is well-equipped for international Muslim students. The university prayer rooms are also available on both campuses.

University Support for International Students

Both universities have dedicated international student advice teams covering visa compliance, healthcare, financial issues, and academic support. The international student society networks at both unions are active and cover most major nationalities. Using these resources proactively – rather than only when something goes wrong – makes a material difference to the quality of the first year experience.
