Cheapest Student Food Birmingham 2026

Birmingham is one of the best UK cities for eating cheaply and well. Here is the student food guide.

Birmingham has an exceptional food culture and much of it is affordable by any standard, let alone a student one. The city’s diversity means cheap options span an unusually wide range of cuisines. Here is where to eat well without a significant budget.

The Balti Triangle, South Birmingham

The cluster of Balti restaurants along Ladypool Road, Stoney Lane, and Stratford Road in south Birmingham is one of the most famous food destinations in the UK. A proper Balti for two with bread and rice typically costs £15-25 for two people. The Al Frash, Shabab, and Grameen are all genuine institutions. A short bus ride from the University of Birmingham campus and entirely worth making.

Digbeth Dining Club

The street food market at Digbeth Dining Club runs Thursday through Saturday evenings at the Rainbow Venues on Digbeth High Street. Individual dishes typically cost £6-9. The selection rotates weekly with different food traders covering everything from Korean BBQ to proper jerk chicken. One of the best value evenings out in the city and free to enter.

Aldi and Lidl in Selly Oak

For students self-catering, the Aldi on Bristol Road and the Lidl in Selly Oak are the foundation of any reasonable student food budget. Weekly shopping for one person covering meals, snacks, and basics consistently comes in at £25-35 at either store. The quality is better than the price suggests.

Wetherspoons Meal Deals

The Goose in Selly Oak runs the standard Wetherspoons breakfast and lunch deal from around £5-7 for a full meal. Not a recommendation for daily use but genuinely useful when the kitchen in your shared house has hit peak chaos.

Chinatown on Arcadian Centre

The Chinese restaurants around Hurst Street and the Arcadian Centre do set lunch deals that represent exceptional value. A multi-course set lunch at several of the restaurants costs around £8-10. The dim sum at weekend lunchtimes is the best version of this.

Broad Street Food Counters

Several of the food outlets running off Broad Street and in the surrounding streets do lunchtime deals at prices below the evening menu. Worth exploring before 2pm if you are in the city centre.
