Student Pubs Near BCU and Aston University Birmingham
Where BCU and Aston students drink in Birmingham. The best pubs in the city centre and Eastside.
Birmingham City University’s main campus sits in the Eastside area of the city centre and Aston University is on Aston Street just north of the inner ring road. Both campuses are close enough to the city centre that students have the full range of central Birmingham drinking options on their doorstep.
The Wellington, Bennett’s Hill
One of Birmingham’s best real ale pubs with a constantly rotating selection of cask ales and craft options. On Bennett’s Hill near New Street, it is central enough to be useful from both campuses. Students who care about beer come here. The range is genuinely impressive and the atmosphere is that of a proper pub rather than a student venue, which is part of the appeal.
The Lord Clifden, Great Hampton Street
On the edge of the Jewellery Quarter, the Lord Clifden is a large Victorian pub with a good beer garden, regular live music, and a relaxed atmosphere. A short walk from Aston University and popular with students who want to get slightly away from the campus area. Sunday roast is one of the better ones in the city at a reasonable price.
Arcadian Centre Bars, Chinatown
The Arcadian Centre on Hurst Street has a cluster of bars and restaurants that are popular with BCU students given the proximity to the Eastside campus. The area also connects to the Gay Village on and around Hurst Street, which has a range of venues with genuinely welcoming atmospheres. Eden Bar and the Loft are both solid options in the complex.
BCU Students Union Bar, Curzon Street
Right on campus and the cheapest option in the immediate area. The union bar runs regular events and the monthly club nights are among the better free or low-cost nights in the city centre for BCU students. Worth checking the events calendar rather than treating it as an afterthought.
The Tap and Spile, Gas Street
On the canal network near Brindleyplace, the Tap and Spile is a traditional canalside pub that gives BCU and Aston students an easy route to one of Birmingham’s more attractive areas for an evening. Good traditional pub with a canal terrace. The Gas Street Basin area as a whole has several bars worth knowing.
