Student Nights Pryzm and Broad Street Birmingham
Pryzm, Broad Street, and the Birmingham student night-out circuit. What to expect and when to go.
Birmingham has one of the most active student nightlife scenes in the UK. Broad Street is the obvious centre but the city has more going on than the main strip, and knowing the full picture makes for better nights out.
Pryzm, Broad Street
Pryzm is the largest purpose-built club venue in Birmingham and runs student nights through the week. Mondays and Wednesdays are the dedicated student nights with the cheapest entry and drinks prices. The venue runs multiple rooms covering different music – chart, RnB, house – simultaneously. Entry is typically £3-6 on student nights with an NUS or university card. The capacity is large which means it rarely sells out on student nights, but pre-booking removes the queue. The VIP area is accessible at a premium on student nights, which is worth it for birthdays.
Broad Street Broader Circuit
Broad Street has a range of venues beyond Pryzm. Rosie’s, Level, Bambu, and Penthouse all run on the main strip. Most have student promoter nights on specific evenings where entry is reduced with a flyer or link. Checking with university student union social media typically reveals which venues are running promoted student nights in any given week. The concentration of venues means you do not need to commit to a single spot for the night.
The Custard Factory, Digbeth
The alternative end of Birmingham’s nightlife. The Custard Factory complex in Digbeth houses Subside, Hare and Hounds events, and several smaller club nights that focus on electronic music, indie, and alternative. The nights here feel less generic than the Broad Street circuit and attract a more mixed crowd of students and young creatives. Worth exploring if Broad Street’s format does not fit your taste.
Hare and Hounds, Kings Heath
A bus or taxi south of the city centre, the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath is one of Birmingham’s best live music and club venues. The programming covers indie, electronic, and various crossover genres and the room is a good size. Popular with University of Birmingham students who want a higher quality booking than a standard student club night.
Practical Notes
Last buses on Broad Street stop running around midnight. Taxis from the Broad Street area are plentiful from midnight but queues are long on Friday and Saturday. Pre-booking an Uber before 1am avoids the surge pricing window. The nightbus routes covering Selly Oak and Edgbaston run until around 2am – check the NX West Midlands app for current times.
